Project Overview:
VMWare flagship Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform vCloud Director has an ever increasing requirement for scale in the number of virtual machines and concurrent users. To meet this requirement we need to improve our persistence layer to handle millions of objects and thousands of concurrent users. We are looking at prototyping a persistence layer leveraging distributed non-relational storage similar to VMware SpringSource Gemfire.
The expected outcome of the internship is to come up with recommendation for persistence architecture for vCloud Director that will enable the product to meet market demands.
Goals:
• Learn about distributed non-relational persistence layers like Gemfire, Redis etc.
• Prototype persistence layer for vCloud Director using selected persistence technology
• Learn about performance and scalability testing
• Compare the performance of the selected non-relational storage to conventional Database
• Prepare report with recommendations for the future persistence architecture of the product
Team & Role:
You will work alongside a senior VMware engineer to achieve the goals of the internship.
Requirements:
We expect a Computer Science student with basic knowledge of programming, algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles (e.g. good design and separation of concerns). The candidate should be comfortable building basic web apps using their preferred technology (Python, Java, persistence frameworks like JPA, Hibernate etc.). The candidate will develop fluency in distributed storage architectures design and the vCloud director while in training. Knowledge of a popular scripting language (e.g. Ruby, Python, etc.) and revision control system (e.g. svn, perforce, git, bzr etc) would be beneficial but is not required.
