Лекция на тема "Technologies behind the UBER of Telecoms for Internet of Things"

Industrial Internet (Industry 4.0), Smart City, Smart Agriculture, Smart Tracking.. and much more, are getting revolutionized by a new family of technologies - the  Low-Power Wide-Area. There are many of them, the most popular being LoRa, SIGFOX, and NB-IoT. 

These technologies have a set of common characteristics, which make them unique and disruptive for Internet of Things applications. Those common traits include an optimized radio modulation, a star topology, frame sizes in the order of tens of bytes transmitted a few times per day at ultra-low speeds and sometimes variable MTUs, and, though downstream may be supported, a mostly upstream transmission pattern that allows the devices to spend most of their time in low-energy deep-sleep mode. This enables a range of several kilometers and a long battery lifetime, possibly ten years operating on a single coin-cell. This also enables simple and scalable deployments with low-cost devices and thin infrastructures. 

This talk will provide an introduction of the characteristics of these technologies, the constraints, as well as the applications to which they are addressed. We will then go in more details on the current R&D challenges and opportunities and the next steps for the industry.

The talk will include a live demonstration of the technology.

About the lecturer:

Alexander Pelov is the CEO and co-founder of ACKLIO. ACKLIO develops software for operating LoRa networks and to make LPWANs (such as SIGFOX, LoRa, and NB-IoT) part of the Internet to facilitate application development. Alexander obtained his MsC from the University de Provence in 2005, and PhD from the University of Strasbourg in 2009, before joining Télécom Bretagne as Associate Professor. His research and teaching activities focused on wireless network energy efficiency, electric vehicles, and protocols for Smart Grids, M2M and IoT. He has co-authored of more than 30 scientific publications in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences, a book, and has pioneered one of the first MOOCs in France, with more than 30’000 students attending the online lectures since 2013. Alexander is co-chair of the LPWAN work group in IETF.
